I've always loved being a book matchmaker. Some books are hits, some are misses. But every now and then, one gets devoured and recommended to the neighbors, the grandparents, and anyone else who will listen.

In this post, I’m sharing 15 novels my 9-year-old son truly loved. Whether you're a teacher looking for high-interest read alouds, or a parent hunting for that “just right” chapter book, these titles were wins.

1. The Wild Robot by: Peter Brown

Roz the robot wakes up alone on a remote island and learns how to survive by observing and helping the animals. Over time, she builds relationships and begins to feel a sense of belonging.

2.  The Tale of Despereaux by: Kate DiCamillo

Despereaux is a small mouse with big ears who loves music and stories. When he breaks mouse rules, he ends up on a journey to save a princess.

3. The One and Only Ivan by: Katherine Applegate

Ivan is a gorilla who lives in a shopping mall and spends his days painting and watching TV. When a young elephant arrives, Ivan decides to find a better life for them both.

4. Holes by: Louis Sachar

5. Percy Jackson (The Lightning Thief)  by: Rick Riordan

Percy discovers he is a demigod and is sent to a special camp for kids like him. He goes on a dangerous quest to prevent a war between the Greek gods.

6. Dogman by: Dav Pilkey

Dog Man is part dog, part police officer, and always ready to fight crime in silly and unexpected ways. His wild adventures are full of jokes, action, and comic book-style illustrations.

7. My Father's Dragon By: Ruth Stiles Gannett

A young boy runs away to Wild Island to rescue a baby dragon. He uses clever tricks and everyday items to overcome obstacles on his journey.

8. Charlotte's Web by: E.B. White

Wilbur the pig is in danger of being slaughtered, but his spider friend Charlotte writes words in her web to save him. Their friendship becomes something truly special.

Mr. Popper unexpectedly receives a penguin, and soon ends up with a house full of them. He trains them to perform, leading to some unusual adventures.

11. A Bear Called Paddington by: Michael Bond

Paddington is a polite but clumsy bear from Peru who moves in with the Brown family. His well-meaning actions often lead to funny mishaps.

12. The BFG by: Roald Dahl

A young girl named Sophie is taken by the Big Friendly Giant to a magical land. Together, they make a plan to stop the mean giants from harming children.

Peter must leave his pet fox, Pax, behind when he goes to live with his grandfather. The story switches between the boy and the fox as they each search for each other.

14. The True Gift by: Patricia MacLachlan

Liam and his sister visit their grandparents for Christmas, but Liam becomes worried about a lonely cow. He decides to give up his own gift to help the animal.

15. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by: Barbara Robinson

When the troublemaking Herdman kids join the Christmas pageant, everyone expects chaos. Instead, they bring a new and surprising meaning to the story.
